Musings of an SEO Newbie

Been thinking about SEO lately!

Been thinking about SEO lately!

I will be the first to admit that I am not an expert in Search Engine Optimization.  However, I have three e-commerce sites and lately have been trying to unravel the mystery of optimizing my sites for search engines.  I have learned a few things along the way that I would like to share with you.  Here is a nice, bulleted list of some things I have learned:

  • Give your images Title and Alt tags – Search engine “spiders” don’t “see” images like you and I do.  Suppose we have two instances of the same image, like this:
    Blake's Sublime Designs

Do you know that the image on the left actually has more “weight” with the search engines? That’s because it has the Title and Alt tags specified. Hover over that image and you will see the title text.

  • Give your hyperlinks title tags – Did you know that you can give your hyperlinks title tags as well?  You can, and not only does it add a professional touch, it helps the search engines.  This link has a title tag.  Hover over it to see the title it has been given.
  • Use “emphasis” on important words - Search engines need to know which words and phrases you think are important on your site, otherwise they will use their own techniques and algorithms to decide for themselves.  My bold bullet points will have more weight in this blog post because they are bold.  So will my name if I say that Blake Raab is writing this blog post.
  • Leverage backlinks from “powerful” sites - I love this one, because it has already been a huge help to me.  Let’s use my business as an example.  “Custom mug” is a very difficult keyword to rank well on in the search engines, simply because it is so common and there are lots of sites online selling custom mugs.  You will be searching for awhile before you find a result linking to my site.  However, I have product photos on Flickr that will rank higher because Flickr has a very good page rank.
  • Cross-link your sites and profiles - Linking to your sites and profiles from each other creates reputable backlinks that will be helpful in increasing your search ranking.  Some sites will use “nofollow”, which means that the spiders won’t crawl those links, but not all sites do, and at least it will be another page for humans to find your link.

I hope this post has given you some helpful pointers to increase your site’s SEO.  Like I said, I’m not an expert, but these tips have helped me on my own site.

Have a Picture-Perfect Holiday Season

Yes, it’s September, but that time of year will be rolling around sooner than you think.  Yes, the time of year when you have to start shopping for relatives and friends who have everything or really obscure tastes.  Have no fear!  Your solution might be a mouse click and/or a camera click away!

So you have a cousin who likes underwater basket weaving, but that doesn’t seem to be a category in the places where you shop?  No problem!  Send us a picture of her basket collection or let us help you design a shirt proclaiming her love of the great hobby.  Our apparel and jewelry section has plenty to offer.

What about your friends who want every decorative item in their home to match?  They’ll love a keepsake box with a design matching their curtains or upholstery, or one of our kitchen items will fit right in with their style.

Do you have an uncle who is obsessed with his classic car and wants nothing for Christmas?  Take a photo of his prized car and he will love it on one of our mugs, or give him a special license plate or license plate frame.

If all else fails, we have gift certificates so your loved ones can customize our products exactly how they want them.

Need more ideas for the people in your life who are hard to shop for?  Leave a comment here and I’ll brainstorm some ideas with you.

Pitching a Big Idea to an Even Bigger Company

I have an idea for the business that would need to be presented to a large company.  This company is large enough that I’m sure most of you have heard of them.  For the sake of confidentiality, I can’t reveal who it is until this gets going.

This idea would greatly benefit both me and the other company involved.  It would obviously bring me a good bit of money, but it would also do the same for the other company and be great PR/marketing for them.

My question to you is this:  How do I go about presenting this to the company while making sure that it hits the people who have the authority to decide and doesn’t end up being tossed by a secretary?

All input is appreciated.  Have a great weekend.  I’ve got an event tomorrow where I will be making custom products on the spot, so I won’t be around all day.

A Neat Picture

I got this forwarded to me by email and thought it was worth sharing.  Regardless of your political views, our soldiers are defending our country and making sacrifices for us.

Here’s the story behind the picture.  A US soldier stationed in Iraq wrote to his wife and told her that he missed smelling the grass and feeling it under his feet.  He asked her to send him some US soil, fertilizer and grass seed.  Outside of his tent in Iraq, he now has a little yard.  When his squadron is about to go on a mission, they take turns walking on the grass growing on US soil for good luck.

My New Store on WordPress

I’m working on setting up a new store for amateur radio custom products.  I’ve already got a CRELoaded version running here, but Heidi Caswell introduced me to an e-commerce plugin for WordPress that I really like.  It has many of the features of my current store, and I really like the ability to have a blog there as well.  If my content is good, it should help draw people to the store and get repeat visitors.

I don’t have much of it set up yet (a bit of the category structure and two products), but you can take a look at it here.  Once I figure out how to import my existing products, the store will be moved to the location of the existing amateur radio store.

Strength in Numbers – Business Networks and Computer Networks

Filed under: Business, social networking — Tags: , , — Blake Raab @ 11:24 am

Don’t worry.  I won’t be discussing routers and switches, but business networking and computer networking are very similar.  Don’t believe me?  Let’s take a look.

  • Shared resources - This is one of the biggest reasons for having a computer network or a business network.  One computer has easy access to the files and resources of the other computers on the network, and an individual can easily share and use resources of others in a business network.
  • Common languages and protocols - Computer networks use protocols like TCP/IP so that each computer knows what to expect and how to handle information on the network.  Likewise, business networks are often set up in similar ways to make it easy to begin using the network and working with other businesses.
  • Division by similar interests – Think of a computer network for a large company.  There are many “divisions” of the company (Marketing, Accounting, etc.), so the network is divided into subnets.  It wouldn’t make sense for Marketing to share the subnet with Engineering, and it would result in unnecessary traffic for both.  In the same way, business networks often have groups for similar business types so that they can more easily communicate and find content relevant to them.
  • Visibility – When a computer connects to a network, it essentially sends a message saying, “I’m here!” so that the other computers know that its resources are available and can find it easily.  Being a member of a business network increases your business’s visibility to potential colleagues and customers.

I’m a member of several business networks, and have found great benefit from them.  You can see my social networking info on this page.

Can anyone think of other similarities that I missed?

Be Genuine With Your Customers

Filed under: Business, customer service — Tags: , , — Blake Raab @ 5:06 pm

I had another random event that had me scratching my head and thinking, “There has to be a blog post in there somewhere!”.

Office Depot mails me catalogs and they customized the cover of the last one.  This one had an obvious problem.

I am now Blake & # 39 S Sublime Designs!  I’m guessing that some HTML somewhere didn’t get parsed properly, but that isn’t the point of my post.  Here is the point:

If you want to appear friendly and approachable to your customers, be genuine about it!

People can spot fake attempts very easily, and they don’t even have to be mistakes like this one.  There is no substitute for genuine relationships with your customers.

Helping out with Amateur Radio

I have plans tomorrow night into Wednesday morning that just happened to come up.  As I mentioned before, I’m an amateur radio operator, and one of our abilities is to help with emergency communications.  Amateur radio works well in emergency situations, because it doesn’t rely on phone lines, which may be down, and can run on many forms of portable power.

Many of the evacuees from Hurricane Gustav are coming into Georgia, and there are shelters set up across the state to accommodate them.  These shelters are being managed by the Red Cross, but hams across the state have volunteered to assist with backup communications between the shelters and “command post” should it be necessary.

A friend of mine, also a ham, is working to coordinate volunteers for backup communications for the local shelters and asked if I would be willing to take one of two available time slots.  The first time slot conflicted with a doctor’s appointment tomorrow, but I chose the second slot.  I’ll be volunteering from 8 PM tomorrow night until 2 AM Wednesday morning.
